Title: Large Solar Energetic Particle Events
Speaker: Dr. Pertti Mäkelä, Catholic University of America, Washington, DC
Abstract: Solar energetic particle (SEP) events have been studied for decades. Large SEP events can severely impact both spacecraft and people in space, but predicting their occurrence and intensity has proven to be difficult. In this webinar, we first present a brief review of the general properties of large SEP events and give an example how high-energy SEPs are measured in space. We then discuss recent results of SEP studies pertaining to space weather. The main focus will be on the dependence of SEP intensity and spectra on preconditioning, CME kinematics, and the magnetic connection of the observer. In addition, we discuss on recent results concerning the distribution of extreme SEP events based on both historical data and more recent observations.
