Magnetic Rossby Waves in The Sun: Influences on Cycle and Space Weather
Dr. Scott W. McIntosh
Deputy Director, NCAR, USA
Abstract:
We will present evidence in support of the presence of global-scale, rotationally driven, magnetized waves in the solar interior. Those waves, akin to Rossby waves that dominate global-scale meteorology in the Earth’s atmosphere, appear to have a significant impact on magnetic flux emergence on the Sun, and as a result, solar cycles and space weather. We will delve into observations and dip into theory. The results of our work drive a contrarian opinion on the magnitude of sunspot cycle 25 – it may be very large.
